{"id":331,"date":"2019-12-18T22:32:23","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T22:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/helmslab.com\/?p=331"},"modified":"2019-12-18T22:32:23","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T22:32:23","slug":"october-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helmslab.com\/?p=331","title":{"rendered":"October fun"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Helms lab had an exciting month of October filled with \ninternational conferences, seminar visits, cucurbit carving, and paper \nwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anjel was invited to speak at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apace2019.org\/\">Asia-Pacific Association of Chemical Ecologists (APACE)<\/a>  biennial meeting in Hangzhou, China. She presented her talk \u201cChemical  cues linked to risk: Plants and insect herbivores respond to chemical  cues from entomopathogenic nematodes\u201d in a symposium on \u201d Signaling and  perception in plant-herbivore interactions\u201d organized by Matthias Erb from the University of Bern in  Switzerland and Yonggen Lou from Zhejiang University in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/helmslab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Anjel-Helms-2-e1576708185787-1024x798.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-334\" width=\"518\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helmslab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Anjel-Helms-2-e1576708185787-1024x798.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/helmslab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Anjel-Helms-2-e1576708185787-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helmslab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Anjel-Helms-2-e1576708185787-768x598.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helmslab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Anjel-Helms-2-e1576708185787-676x527.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Helms lab also had the pleasure of hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/ento.psu.edu\/research\/labs\/john-tooker\/lab-members\/eric-yip\">Dr. Eric Yip<\/a>\n from Penn State for a seminar visit. Eric presented his talk on \n\u201cExploring the ecology of a plant that eavesdrops on its specialist \nherbivore\u201d as part of the TAMU Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Program \nseminar series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/helmslab.files.wordpress.com\/2019\/12\/img_2253.jpg?w=491&amp;h=368\" alt=\"IMG_2253\" class=\"wp-image-319\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After Eric\u2019s visit, we hosted Anjel\u2019s Ph.D. advisor, <a href=\"https:\/\/ento.psu.edu\/research\/labs\/john-tooker\">Dr. John Tooker<\/a>\n from Penn State. John gave a guest lecture on gall insects for our \ngraduate-level chemical ecology course and presented a seminar on \u201cToxic\n slugs chart a path back to IPM\u201d as part of the TAMU Entomology \nDepartment seminar series.
